Claude Thornhill (1909 - 1965) was an American pianist, arranger and bandleader. His orchestra, rather daring in its day, embraced Bebop & laid the ground work for Cool Jazz.

In the early 40's Gil Evans, another such instrumental figure, joined as arranger, further refining the ethereal, harmonically rich ballads that would remain the Orchestra's legacy.
