Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks first collaborated on The Beach Boys famed aborted Smile project. Though this album was eventually scrapped, Wilson and Parks wrote many songs together that would be released by The Beach Boys in the following years. In 1995, the duo released the album Orange Crate Art. Essentially being a solo Van Dyke Parks album, with guest vocals from Brian Wilson, it was considered a critical and commercial flop. Several years later in 2004, Wilson would release his album Smile, containing many of Parks' original lyrics. Critically, the album was a massive success, and it fared rather well commercially.
