Brian James

1) Brian James (born Brian Robertson 18 February 1955, London, England) is a punk musician, best known as the original guitarist for The Damned. His first bands were the proto-punk outfits London SS and Bastard. Some of the influences of Bastard's on stage appearance would surface later when James moved on to what would prove to be another pioneering punk band; The Damned, recording on their first two albums Damned, Damned, Damned and Music for Pleasure before leaving. Brian subsequently formed and disbanded Tanz Der Youth and Brian James Brain's who briefly became The Hellions. The latter suffered the indignity of being 'canned' off stage at Reading Rock '80 by a crowd who had come to see the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal bands whom the festival, by now, embraced. James guested on The Saints' 1982 album Out in the Jungle. He would later play in The Lords of the New Church with Stiv Bators. He recorded three albums with the band, playing with them from 1982 till their break-up in 1989. Brian James has also played with Iggy Pop's solo band including live albums such as Heroin Hates You. In 1998 James played guitar on an album with band The Dripping Lips. He currently fronts his own band The Brian James Gang, and is a founding member of the reformed The Lords of the New Church.
