Bitter, Bitter weeks started as a solo project from Brian McTear in Philly (where it is still based) but now it includes some other people as well. The music is really beautiful - personal with folky singer/songwriter hints but with more rawness. Brian's haunting voice gives the music an edge lacking from a lot of the music that would fall into this category. See him live if you can.
