Jason Coffman began recording as anaphylaxis in 1994 and released his first works through tape-trading before the first anaphylaxis cd, "component," was released in 1999. Early recordings were primitive shortwave radio and sampler-based, but after the release of "component" Coffman began using various computer software. The resulting prolific period that followed saw the release of six full-length anaphylaxis releases in the space of three years, followed by a somewhat accidental hiatus that ended in April 2005 with the release of the album "noise for lovers."

anaphylaxis is heavily influenced by artists such as My Bloody Valentine, Flying Saucer Attack, and lovesliescrushing, reflecting Coffman's desire to create beautiful sounds without restrictions of formal composition. Most of the output of anaphylaxis has been heavily processed sample manipulation, rearranging pieces of familiar sounds and songs until they are unrecognizable.

Coffman added Teresa Santoski as an official member of anaphylaxis after her vocal contributions to "noise for lovers" in 2003. Andrew Horton joined the project in 2006 for live performances, but will also be working on programming and arrangement for the next anaphylaxis album.
