Holiday Season 2011: Classics Reimagined

|

For our money, some of the best Christmas songs are the classic Christmas songs and the fun of discovery comes with digging up new interpretations of the “oldies.” Here’s a gift of three free tracks (though we’re still working on tying a ribbon around an MP3).

We begin with the [mp3com-artist]Gothard Sisters[/mp3com-artist] recording of “Carol of the Bells.” Based in the Seattle area, the Gothard Sisters are a beautiful trio of young ladies who have been performing together since they were just kids. Along with 24-year old Greta and 22-year old Willow, 16-year old Solana Gothard joins her sisters as a violinist, percussionist and Irish dancer, talents she and her sisters have found to be of award-winning quality.

Their version of “Carol of the Bells” appears on their album simply entitled Christmas.

Turbopop

Turbopop

Somewhere at the other end of the musical spectrum from the lovely Gothard Sisters is the not-so-lovely German indie band, [mp3com-artist]Turbopop*[/mp3com-artist]. We have absolutely no idea who these guys are — they’ve not left a trace of where they’ve gone — but we like a good guitar-drenched version of “Adestes Fideles” as much as the next guy. And we dig the chimes.

The Layaways

The Layaways

The [mp3com-artist]Layaways[/mp3com-artist] began in 2003 as a solo project by singer/guitarist David Harrell. When Mike Porter and Nathan Burleson joined in, they became a band. Though they lay claim to [mp3com-artist]Yo La Tengo[/mp3com-artist] and [mp3com-artist]Jesus and Mary Chain[/mp3com-artist] as influences, they also dig folk and shoegazey dream pop. That’s what we have here with their version of “O Christmas Tree.”

Merry Christmas!
