Free MP3: Mike Coykendall, “The Hippie Girl”

The Spotlight

Every now and then, you come across an artist who has worked with so many great musicians, that you know their personal project will be good even before you hear it. Mike Coykendall has played with and produced M Ward, Blitzentrapper, Bright Eyes, and She & Him, just to name a few, and those names are enough for us to click play.

As you might expect with a track released by a musician that also produces and engineers other artists’ albums, Coykendall shows an effortless grace in his craft. The arrangement is outstanding, with everyone involved placed in an absolutely crucial but never overstated roll. “Hippie Girl” sounds just like it should. It’s laid back, effortless, and organic, with a slightly distorted disposition. Recorded in Portland, the song features Ben Gibbard, Eric Early, and Zooey Deschanel.

[Zooey Deschanel is adorable and wonderful in every way, but I’m guessing it must be hell to work with her in the Pacific Northwest. “Is that rain?” “Yes, Zooey, for the 57th f#cking time today. That. Is. Rain. Stop ordering tomato soup. We can’t even fit the guitars in here anymore, there’s so much damn soup. No, Siri, no! No more soup, Siri!”]

That is, of course said, with all due respect to Miss Deschanel. Her work on this song is outstanding and her backing vocals complete the track in a way few could. Eric Early’s (Blitzentrapper) lap steel is just gravy on the mix too. Enough talk, download the track below:
