Ponderosa’s debut album Moonlight Revival was a full-on rootsy, Southern rock jangler. That said, with the release of their sophomore album Pool Party, you can forget most everything you know about Ponderosa.
Pool Party is 10 ethereal, floating songs that take time to inhale and calmly exhale as they shimmer across an expansive soundscape, with only the hypnotic, monochromatic drum beat keeping the tracks tethered to the ground. You probably won’t be surprised to find out David Fridmann, who has produced most all the Flaming Lips’ records, produced this one as well.
“Black Hill Smoke” is a stoney grower that’ll lure you in with an almost coaxing laziness before lifting you off the couch and up, out of your body with soaring, fuzzed out monster riffs. You can pick it up for free below
