Taking inspiration from a classic Jimmy Webb track, the much celebrated Wichita Recordings is arguably one of the finest independent labels the UK has produced.
Formed by Mark Bowen and Dick Green who were previously involved with the legendary Creation Records, the first step Wichita took was the UK release of Fevers and Mirrors by indie here Bright Eyes. Soon after the likes of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, My Morning Jacket, The Cribs, The Bronx, Les Savy Fav and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah we’re proudly sitting on the labels ever growing roster.
But arguably the biggest release to date is Bloc Party‘s debut album ‘Silent Alarm’. After gaining widespread critical acclaim and changing a generation of British kids it fully cemented the label as one of the most exciting around when it comes to new music.
Today the roster remains as strong as ever. Recent releases form the likes of indie rockers Cloud Nothings, Swedish folksters First Aid Kit and seven-piece indie poppers Los Campesinos! have done the label pround. With future releases on the horizon from the likes of Best Coast and The Cribs, 2012 is already looking like a great year for music.
