You’re My Biggest Fan: This Week’s Staff Faves

Weekly Playlist

We’ve given away so much great music this week, we could close our eyes and pin the tail on the MP3 and still come up with a winner every time. We’ll remind you of a few of our faves before we grab a stick and break the MP3 pinata that’s hanging in the boss’s office that’s full of next week’s music.

Eric Lindell

In our rock and roll department, we have to go with Eric Lindell‘s “Sentimental Lover” as our fave ‘cuz “it sums up everything there is to love about New Orleans rock and roll: the sense of humor of Ernie K-Doe, the deep in the pocket groove of the Meters, the rolling, tumbling patois of Fats Domino, the sexy swing of Chris Kenner.”

Haroula Rose

Over in our loosely defined country category, it’s a dead heat between our current crush, Haroula Rose, and a band of fellows out of Northern California, True Mad North.

Of Haroula’s song, “Brand New Start,” we spoke of how her “gossamer voice speaks of the intensely human urge to step out of the line, to break free from the strictures that are supposed to keep us safe (but really prevent us from being truly free).”

Meanwhile, we’re mad about True Mad North and their country rock record, “a set of that gives you chills one minute and warms you like a soft blanket the next.” We were particularly bubbly about the “touches of 60s Southern California pop (read: Boyce and Hart) amidst the spirit of Jackson Browne and Eagles.”

“Loaded with a full-on R&B groove, jam-packed with funky horns and topped off with warmly delivered vocals” is what we said about our pop fave of the week, Ben Rector‘s “Let The Good Times Roll”. It’s “Van Morrison, Stevie Winwood and Boz Scaggs all wrapped in a glistening set of blue-eyed soul for the 21st Century.”

Last but not least we give props to multi-cultural rappers Toby and Tunji, the pair of heavy hitters known as Inverse who worked with Noah King to drop this deal called “HipHopSoul.”
