As much as we loved the songs we gave away this week from Seeker Lover Keeper and AVAN LAVA, it’s been the category called country that took our ears for a ride this week. From Hawks in L.A. to friends on the Front Porch, this week’s been all about the twang.
The band that Dave Alvin calls “a California treasure” (and we simply call the best band to come out of LA since the Flying Burrito Brothers), I See Hawks In LA turned us on to their new album, A New Kind of Lonely, by way of a Free MP3 of the Day called “Spirit of Death.” It’s not a sad song, though. It’s actually amazingly joyful, as you can hear.
Great music often comes from great friendships and that’s never been more true than with the songs that come from America’s Ambassadors of Country Music: the Front Porch Country Band. A five man one woman crew that have been singing, traveling and recording together for the better part of 20 years, they inspired us to dig out our Hank Williams and Dave Dudley records when we heard “Louisiana Line.”
Last but certainly not least are a trio of young cats who infuse some down and dirty rock riffs into their particular kind of country, the Fannin County, Texas trio called the Brandon Bush Band. We want to mix the song, “You Make it Look So Easy,” into a set with the Georgia Satellites and the Drive By Truckers. Pretty much gives you an idea of where Brandon and his boys are coming from, doesn’t it?
