On The Scene: Memphis Hip-Hop

On The Scene

Memphis is the home the blues, right? But that’s not all. The place where Beale meets the blues has turned out some quality hip-hop, too. Here are a pair of artists who are TN natives who need to be dropped onto your playa.

Memphis native Lunatic Da New Face N Rap cut his teeth on the rap scene some 20 years ago in CA when he started recording for Lockdown. Back home in Memphis, he formed The Playa House Connection, a collective of rappers who also ran Playa House Entertainment.

Lunatic has since moved his show to KC where he just released his newest joint, Hood Infested. This one, “Knockin’ Doors Down (Do Dirt Hustlaz),” is from Mixtape Murda, Vol. 1.

Raised in Memphis and now staying in the 404, S.M.G. (Southern Minded Gangstaz) are dropping beats and rhymes along the lines of the classics. Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Too Short and 2Pac are all names that come to mind over this cut, “Done Talkin’,” featuring Lil Scrappy and produced by Tony Heat.
