We know a theme when we see one, a pair of “bird” bands, flocking together for your downloading pleasure (though there’s little more than their names to put them in the same category).
We start with a tune on the Americana tip from Blackbird Harmony. You might remember Blackbird from our Free MP3 of the Day, “Picture Of You,” dating all the way back to the old days of December 2011.
Blackbird Harmony is actually Evan Birdsong, a singer/songwriter who draws from both Jay Farrar and Lou Reed to create a breed of Southern American folk that’s as cold and metallic as water from the bottom of a well.
This cut from the elusive singer called “Haunted Hearts” can be found on the album called Angel With Outstretched Hands.
Birds of a different feather are A Lot Like Birds, a fluid band of 6 to 8 people who say they’re known for their “tendency to experiment with several diverse genre influences and their incorporation of orchestral and ambient sound-scapes contrasted by chaotic, schizophrenic episodes.”
This one’s from their debut album, Plan B. They have a new one out on Doghouse Records called Conversation Piece and can be seen live in places like Otis Orchards, WA (January 14, 2012) and Cleveland, OH (January 26, 2012).
