To Your Ears By Way Of Wales: Staff Fave Anika (Courtesy of Stones Throw Records)
From Sweden to Wales to Southwest Houston, we’re spanning the globe to bring you a constant variety of great music. ‘Cuz that’s how we roll at the home of the Free MP3 of the Day.
“Another day, another Swede proving how much better they are at making electronic music than the rest of us,” said ptorts as he introduced Dada Life last Friday.
Individually, they’re Olle Corneer and Stefan Engbloom; together they’re a six-year old electropop phenomenon that never ceases to amaze. Off the record, they’ve invited marching bands on stage in Vegas and incited riots in L.A. On the record, well, they’re just plain groovy.
Dig some of their “Happy Violence.”
On Monday, Anngie helped shake out the beginning of the week blues with a Free MP3 of the Day by Anika, a 24-year old journalist turned singer.
“If you like elegant, otherworldly music created on vintage electronics, then British psych-pop singer Anika comes highly recommended,” Anngie says. “Same goes if you’re a fan of the Velvet Underground, The Slits, and Portishead.”
It so happens that the song Anika passed along for us to feature includes the aforementioned Portishead honcho, Geoff Barrow, backing Anika with his band, Beak>.
“Marcus Manchild and Luu Breeze pay tribute to one of the greatest ever.” That was the word from Will earlier this week as he posted on the duo’s Free MP3 of the Day called “Pac Tribute.”
The song features a sample of 2Pac himself (from his classic “Picture Me Rollin,”) and “shows Marcus Manchild and Luu Breeze capturing the love of the game spirit of hip-hop that 2Pac embodied.”
“Marcus Manchild has embraced the type of street level songs that those early rap pioneers made their name on” and his collaboration on “2Pac Tribute” brings it home.
