Label of the Week: Secretly Canadian

Label of the Week

Secretly Canadian have been releasing cutting edge alternative and indie rock records since 1996 – from the same office that the team at Jagjaguwar (last week’s Label of the Week) call home in Bloomington, Indiana.

But with an identity firmly their own, the label have brought music by artists such as Animal Collective, BLK JKS and Yeasayer to the masses – with over 200 other releases being stamped with the Secretly Canadian seal of approval.

Elsewhere, the label are championing the post-punk sound of Sunns, the beautiful vocals of Antony and the Johnsons and the charismatic Richard Swift – amongst many others.

Gardens & Villa – Black Hills

Santa Barbara quintet Gardens & Villas recorded their full-length in Oregon with label-mate Richard Swift. The absence of a shower and a kitchen didn’t put a dampener on things – seen clearly by the sublime quality of the above track, “Black Hills”, which features on the self-titled album released in July.

Jens Lekman – An Argument With Myself

Swedish songwriter Jen Lekmen has recently released a new EP on Secretly Canadian to add to his already overflowing back catalog of music. The above is the title-track from the EP – an upbeat and buoyant song that shows off Jens’ sense for a great pop hook.

The War On Drugs – Baby Missiles

The War On Drugs started when central member Adam Granduciel moved from Philadelphia to California, enlisting guitarist Kurt Vile and various other musicians to play with him. “Baby Missiles” comes from the recently released second studio album Slave Ambient.
