Label of the Week: Jagjaguwar

Label of the Week

Dealing largely in the rock, indie and folk genres, Indiana’s Jagjaguwar label has carved a fine name for itself with releases by numerous critically acclaimed artists.

The label was started in the mid-90’s by Darius Van Arman as a reaction to wanting to be affiliated to a label with his own band The Curious Digit. Van Arman soon got a taste for releasing music and other bands followed, with alumni artists including Ladyhawk and Swan Lake.

Today Jagjaguwar boast acts such as veteran rockers Dinosaur Jr., psychedelic Canadians Black Mountain and experimental quintet Oneida.

Jagjaguwar are another unfortunate label to have stock damaged in the recent blaze at a PIAS warehouse in London. Here they have kindly given us three tracks available for you to download for free – have a listen and if you like what you hear the artists will surely appreciate your support.

Bon Iver – “Calgary

Quickly becoming a household name, Bon Iver’s self-titled second album has struck the hearts of music listeners worldwide – leading to collaborations with the likes of Kanye West. “Calgary” is the lead-single from the aforementioned album and is a perfect example of Justin Vernon’s renowned trembling falsetto vocal.

Okkervil River – “Your Past Life as a Blast”

This track comes from the Texan’s sixth and latest album I am Very Far. Using various different methods for recording such as duct tape for percussion and throwing file cabinets across the room, you are assured of an interesting listen from the experimental folksters.

Peter Wolf Crier – “Settling It Off

Written after performing one hundred shows in six months, the duo that make up Peter Wolf Crier are here with their second album Garden of Arms. This upbeat yet subdued track does a lot to showcase their infectious vocal patterns and calm tones.
