For Day 4 of our Electronic Weekly Playlist, we bring you a couple of tunes to kick back and relax with. Though a lot of electronica is oriented towards club and party atmospheres, a large portion of it is intended to be relaxing hang-out music.
In the mid 1970’s, Brian Eno began experimenting with a style of electronic music he called ambient music. The idea of ambient music is that, as Eno stated, it can be either “actively listened to with attention or as easily ignored, depending on the choice of the listener”, and that exists on the “cusp between melody and texture”. Or as Erik Satie, an ambient music innovator from the early 20th century described it: furniture music. It is pleasant, yet unobtrusive.
Ambient music exists at one extreme of electronic music’s spectrum (with something like Hardcore Techno on the other end), and in between is a whole range of styles. Here are a couple tracks from Air France and Blackbird Blackbird – two bands who, though they are a bit beyond what would be consider ambient music, create some good tunes for just hanging out and relaxing.
