Spotlight on Austin City Limits: Bobby Long

The Spotlight

Austin City Limits first existed as a showcase for all different sorts of Texan music, so what would an Austin City Limits Spotlight be without some rootsy folk music? Today we’re featuring an ENTIRE Last.fm Discover Studio Session of the talented folk troubadour Bobby Long.

Bobby Long‘s stripped down acoustic melodies are reminiscent of many great American folk singers – he’s drawn comparisons to Ryan Adams and The Felice Brothers – but he is in fact from Manchester, England.  Long got his first big break when his song “Let Me Sign” was included on the Twilight soundtrack (the use of it was championed by his good friend and Twilight star Robert Pattinson, who sings backing vocals on the soundtrack version).

Bobby Long is an able guitar player, mixing finger picking and strumming styles to support his poetic lyrics.  His words show him to be a conscientious songwriter, “Two Years Old” is a particularly poignant track. Reminiscent of the works by famous British poet Wilfred Owen, it  uses England’s participation in world wars as a metaphor to speak of the lasting effects of trauma – “these pain that I have inside is two years old/ these scars that I have inside are more than two years old,” Long sings.
