Bumbershoot 2011: Charles Bradley, Mavis Staples Among Roots, Jazz, And Soul Highlights

The Spotlight

As we noted yesterday, summer festival season is not over yet. Bumbershoot takes place this weekend in Seattle, and the lineup is again impressive.

Aside from featuring a variety of rock and hip-hop heavyweights, the Seattle-based Bumbershoot Music & Arts Festival also includes some legendary performers from the roots, soul, and R&B side of the musical spectrum.

A few highlights:

Recent Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Leon Russell has played with everyone from Bob Dylan and the Beach Boys to Willie Nelson and George Benson–and had a few hits of his own along the way. He plays Sunday, Sept. 4. (Check out a vintage Leon Russell interview.)

A member of the legendary soul/gospel group the Staples Singers, singer Mavis Staples was back in the spotlight recently thanks to her powerful album You Are Not Alone, produced by Wilco‘s Jeff Tweedy. She plays Saturday, Sept. 3.

New Orleans performer Trombone Shorty is quickly gaining a wider national audience–catch his entertaining performance Saturday, Sept. 3.

And now for the free music. Yesterday we hipped you to “Callejon”, a free song from Puerto Rican garage-rock band Davila 666.

Today, check out a free MP3 from soul music veteran Charles Bradley–who recently released his first album, No Time For Dreaming. Bradley is playing Bumbershoot on Monday, Sept. 5.

“The World (Is Going Up In Flames)” is a slow, steady soulful burner in the classic R&B tradition: politically-charged, world-weary lyrics reminiscent of Marvin Gaye‘s best records of the early ’70s, delivered by a voice with the grit of Otis Redding and the gospel of the Reverend Al Green.
